Standard methods of cancer treatement e.g. radiotherapy and chemotherapy are well known for their high toxicity and insufficiency as modes of cancerous cell eradication. A new proton therapy centre will be opened in Munich Germany. This method is far superior to current methods because the energy of "proton beams" can be focused to a specific area, which unlike conventional radiotherapy where increased dosages would also affect the surronding healthy tissues, this method can be used to safely damage the dna of the toxic cancerous cells. The problems currently are in expense, it is difficult to build and outfit particle accelerators for medical use - hopefully interest in this area results in these issues becoming not more than trivialities.
It is my hope that people invest in this, developing cheaper, smaller and more efficient offerings - so many lives could be saved and made much easier. With continued brilliant work like this, cancer would be as polio to our children.
