Adventures in heightfields

Been doing a bit of experimenting in terrain generation with heightfields.

A chapter in Game Programming Tricks of the Trade showed me how to do this very simple example (essentially 2 textures, with a mix of grass and rock at lower elevations and just rock at the higher elevations. The grass is from the book's CDROM and the rock texture is something I made with a digital camera. Next step is to create a skybox for the background.

I'm not sure how I feel about the book, it has too much fluff in it and is expensive (I would have felt a bit ripped off if I hadn't found a really cheap copy at a discount book store). It does have a few good chapters though.

I'm also thinking about picking up a copy of Focus On 3D Terrain Programming by Trent Polack.

Terrain has always interested me. I've come up with some ways to do it on my own, but I keep meaning to find articles and other peoples' source.

I just picked up GPU Gems 2. Rather good book I would recommend.
