Okay this is the second time I am writing this, the first time, my internet cut out as I was sending it and I lost it[crying].

Today, I finished 2 things that were really bothering me about A20.

Thing #1: Controls
I finally got the beginners controls working (took lots longer than expected). Now the fighter behaves more... "user-friendly". It can no longer stall, it turns a lot sharper, and I added an air brake so you can slow the plane down on strafing runs and dogfights. For all you guys hwo finally got used to the advanced controls for A20 (all 3 of you), the switch to the beginner setting is really easy, and I find myself prefering it over advanced now, but I'll let you guys decide when I release the update.

Thing #2: Flak
The flak fires bullets now, and I think it really kicks ass. It gets pretty intense when 2 or 3 flak cannons are firing at you, and you have a MIG you're trying to fight. There's one part in the level I made for testing where there are 4 medium flak bunkers in a row, and flying through them can be pretty hectic, it looks like the trench run in star wars. Unfortunately, the effect is lost when not in motion, so the screenshots at the bottom of this post don't really show the "coolness" of the flak.

Well, thats all I really did today, so I'll leave you guys to ogle(I hope ;D) at these screenies I made today.

Dogfighting a MIG-X3 and being shot at by flak

Attacking a light flak bunker

Random Screen of the Day: Attacking the poor islandfolk

Mark's Texture of the DayF-4E Phantom II (Air Force)

Peace out, and dont forget to try Flak Defender[grin]

Thanks, I'm looking forward to seeing what you write in your journal.

Yeah, I probably switched terms alot during my explanation, so here it goes. the advanced and beginner controls actually have the same key functons, the only difference is how the plane reacts to the control input. For example, In the advanced version(the one in the current version) , when you switched from hover mode to flight mode, the plane started moving forward really slow, the game detected the player's speed, and then the game had the player 'stall' because it didn't have enough airspeed. In the beginners version, you don't have to worry about stalls and whatnot, but the controls are still the same. Does that explanation help any?

Also, there is only one level in the demo version on the GDS right now, and I'll probably have only one level in my next update too, however It will probably be a new level so you dont have to play the same one over and over again.

I'm not sure yet, I dont know how much stuff I want to change between the two versions, so I really don't know wht else I have left to do. I'll probably just polish up the GUI, tweak some flak values, and finish messing with the flight model(its kinda wonky when you're in beginner mode). I'll probably have it on the GDS before next week, I'll let you guys know through my journal.

Thanks for the replys everyone[grin]

Angels 20 is starting to look very nice, the kind of game you send to a games company and they call you for that interview :-)

That would be pretty cool, until they looked at the source and saw how much hacked in crap there is[wink].

what exactly do you mean by hacked
July 24, 2005 09:21 PM
Sir Sapo
I mean taht I solved a lot of problems I had in the game by brute force instead of an elegant, flexible solution.

It's Mark!

He probably means hacking of the Ctrl-C then Ctrl-V kind, if you know what I mean ( I kid!)

The game is looking cool though, the only thing I can think of from seeing that level is having an 'Vacant lot' tile for between the buildings. I also think that having the flak shooting what look like lasers may ruin the island atmosphere
I look forward to the finishing the tileset once and for all
