So, I was giving this project some thought on the way home from London last night and the main issue which I was wondering about is how to deal with the image headers and extract the infomation while keeping a sane stream interface and I think I've got the answer - a state machine or call back system.

Basically, you'd register a call back which would be called when decoding of the header data is complete, the rest of the data can be decoded and put out into memory.

So, it would look something like this;

filter_obj.registerCallback(functor);
stream.push(filter_obj);

stream.read(destmemory,size);

I'm still working on the specifics [grin]
