A Bridge Too Far

Mysteries of the Universe #7,271: How is it that all the 3D graphics tutorials made by amateurs out there reference the high end features of Lightwave, Maya and 3D Studio Max, tools which cost thousands of dollars? o_O

Straylight Update

Since my book's almost done I've been taking some time to remember how to use all of those dev tools I've had to put down (more than 6 months ago!)

One very cool tool is Wings3D. If you think you have no artistic skill but you need 3D models, this is, next to Blender, one of the best free tools I can recommend. I've been playing with the new Bend feature, which allows you to create very nice curves in objects.

Using it, I was able to go from this

to this

in under 15 minutes.

I've also been exploring what it takes to create even more elaborate structures, like suspension bridges:

This new feature is real a blessing because the colonies in Straylight will need lots of roads and bridges once you leave Earth.

holy crap, I'm going to download wings3D right now.

Which reminds me. I need to write a model loader. </3 OGL. Long live D3D (which I was forced to give up [bawling])

EDIT: Looks like their page is down. Or maybe I can't connect. Either way, looks like I'll be downloading it tommorrow.

Wow, looks impressive. What's the interface like? I'm afriad blender put me off a bit with its interface so I'm using Anim8or which is nice and straight-forward but could use some more features.

Nice, your putting my models I've done in Wings3D to shame :)

It'd be great if you could show a few more shots as how you actually got there.

That's damned impressive modelling there Wavinator. You are strongly tempting me to convert my 2D game design to 3D! Oh well, yet another tool to evaluate. [grin]

Thanks for the comments, guys!

@Mushu & Patbert: The interface is really easy to get used to using because you can manipulate an object as if it were clay. If you see something you want to move, you just click on it and move it (left to select, right to perform an operation). Rotating the camera is a snap (either LMB + RMB or middle button).

Wings also has both advanced & simple menus, too, so it's not too intimidating to get started. There's a decent library of primitives to start, a very nice manual (esp. for a free project), lots of help online and it's constantly being improved. I'd strongly recommend it!

@MustEatYemen: I'll try to start showing some intermediary steps. Like I said, I'm no artist, but I'd be happy to share what I know!

@Trapper Zoid: Hey, look at it this way, if you do your stuff in 3D, you can always render it out and get some nice 2D sprites. [smile]

@noaktree: Aren't academic versions feature crippled? I keep seeing tuts that use EVERYTHING in Maya and 3DS, which makes me highly suspicious (and envious).
