I'm no longer developing my engine. I may attempt to salvage bits and pieces of it... but for the most part it's dead. * Takes a drink *

Time to start over... I can already hear John H. groaning about engine development, etc. But this time I'm doing it with a pre built system so it's like starting over 500 leagues further down the path than where I just was. A developer's "teleporter" of sorts.

Troll meets OGRE...

The reason my engine is dying has to do with game making. You know that thing we're all supposed to be doing instead of wasting our time on various subsystems. I have decided to continue development of my Troll game ( yeah that's the working title ) and will be looking to put together a solid first level over the coming months. After that I may put together a small team to complete the project. I've decided to use OGRE as the main rendering system in order to save myself a year's++ worth of work.

Shoulder devil is saying, "Neil, you know you can make those systems...Just do it yourself...You know you want to anyway." And my shoulder Hattan isn't saying anything but he's holding a really big gun at my head and giving me a drunken smile. So it looks like I have to settle with tweaking out the OGRE. I've already noticed a couple o' things * hiccup * that'll need to be added to the animation system so I can have the timer controlled blending I'm used to having with DECal.

My first order of business will be to duplicate the demo level I've already created using OGRE. But maybe I'll want to get rid of these scary fucking shoulder beings before I do that.

Another one bites the dust [oh]

Dunno about you, but I tend to look at such "in the bin" projects as being a brilliant learning process - it's not so much where you ended up, but how you got there [smile]

Sounds interesting to me. Maybe I haven't been paying enough attention - but what sort of game will it be?

I'd go with this plan. People might start thinking you're a little strange if you keep talking/arguing with imaginary creatures sitting on your shoulders. Worst case is you get put away in the loony bin and we don't get anymore journal entries ([bawling]).

I completely agree. And thanks for the positive thought.

I'm not sure what you'd call it but the game play is based on the lego star wars game. You can download a flash movie of it here. If you haven't played lego star wars then I'd say give it a try.

It's the summoning part that's easy. Getting rid of them is much harder. [wink]

That has to be the most entertaining sentance I've read in a week. I salute you.

As for Ogre, it is a great engine, but I failed when I tried to jump into using it. Good luck!

Noooooooooo!!

If you want to make a game it's probably a good idea. I was looking forward to a freaking sweet DEengine though ;)

Thanks Rob! I'm already feeling very comfortable with OGRE. Expect results soon!

I'll let you in on a little secret then...That was the third generation of that particular engine. I usually come back to it after I make a game. Just can't help myself.

[oh] I once sat in a excellent traditional english country pub that had loads of (empty) bottles of beer around the ceiling timbers... one of them was Monty Pythons Holy Grail. Absolutely genious name [grin]

I feel your pain Noaktree. I too decided to abandon my own quest in engine development in favor of Torque2D. However I wholeheartedly agree with jollyjeffers, and I in fact realized that when I quit working on my engine. I still learned a lot in the process.
