New Camera

Sir Sapo

Hey everyone!

I fixed a problem that's been bugging me for a long time today, tte camera system in A20. The system you guys have been playing with is static, all it does is scroll to the players position and move back enough to see stuff. This works fine if you can already see the ground, but when you are dive bombing something, and you can't see more than 100 feet in front of you, it poses a bit of a problem. I'd been getting some feedback about A20, and a recurring theme was that the viewable area was too small. I could have pulled the camera back a couple more units, but then we lose the detail of Mark's painstakingly drawn images, but something had to change, so I compromised. I programmed a simple little routine into the game that automatically zooms the camera out when the player reaches an altitude where he/she couldn't see the ground. It actually worked really good for the amount of work I put into it (4 extra lines of code), although the textures do deteriorate, but I don't think its a gameplay crippler. Here's a screenshot of the zoomed out screen, and under it you can download a little lo-res crap video of the 'smart-zoom' in "action".

Crappy Movie!!!

Anyways, besides making the new camera work, I also worked on my cutscene stuff. I basically finished the sound system, and made the movies framerate independant.

Speaking of framerate independence, I still have to make the actual gameplay of A20 in framerate independent, which is going to be a pain in the ass, and will make my code really hard to read on account of its current structure(or lack thereof[grin]), so I think that will be the last thing I do unless I'm really bored one day and have 5 hours to burn.

Mark has drawn up some destroyed vehicles so that the repair trucks, tanks , etc will actually look crumbled when destroyed. He's also drawing up a damaged fighter, which would appear if your health dropped below 20% or something like that. I'm also putting a smoke emitter on the players plane that will puff out smoke randomly if your health is critical.

Well, thats all for now, let me know what you guys think of the new camera, I'll upload a new version with some bug fixes and the new camera tomorrow. Peace out!
