I managed to break my phone yesterday, so I've decided that I want a black Motorola Razr V3. And, I'll try playing with J2ME for it.
I had a poke around the carphone warehouse website - a T-Mobile phone is GBP200, or a Virgin on is GBP160, and comes with GBP10 credit. Since I already have a T-Mobile SIM, I'd like to keep it, but it's not worth the extra GBP40. I'll see how much it costs to unlock a phone, or my sister's boyfriend's dad will unlock it for a tenner.
Anyway, I'm gonna take a wander up Princes Street tomorrow and see how much it'll be. The service provider shops like the T-Mobile shop usually only want to sell you the phone as contract, which I can't afford and don't want. But I'll give them a go anyway.
I also want to find out how much the data cable and stuff is, and if it comes with the phone or if it's extra. Since doing J2ME dev would be pretty hard without it.
Also also, I might go buy a new PC tomorrow. I've been meaning to get one for a wee while now, and I want an AMD64 and a PCI-X graphics card. Anything else I'm not too bothered about, although a stupidly large hard drive would be nice. I'm more concerned about getting a phone just now, the PC can wait for a few months.
That'll do for now. I'll post tomorrow with a full report.
I had a Motorola a few years ago, 'twas a total donkey, but I think things have moved on somewhat.
And avoid PC World for replacing your rig.
