Crunch Time Part 2

Sir Sapo

Hey everyone!

I've been working for the past 5 hours now, and my head is starting to hurt[grin].

I've done alot today, but there's still much to be done.

The first thing I did today was mess with the level format so that we could allow for more mission parameters, such as weapons available, and to allow the game to load up ship types. I also fixed alot of problems with the level editor, and added alot of shortcut keys. Mark has already started making some of the levels, and I will probably join in tomorrow. We've settled on 12 (required) levels in the IGF version, with one mission being an optional "training" one with minimal enemies.

Cool Thing I Did Today: The Fortress

Thats right, today I created the boss for the first campaign, the Fortress. The Fortress is a huge structure that was built by the Cubans to shoot down satellites, allowing them to move their forces undetected. It shoots long beam of 'death', but it can only shoot a super powerful blast every couple of hours or so, so when it fires a powerful blast, the player is sent in to kill it. But the laser can still shoot small blasts that can hurt your plane, and the Fortress also has missile launchers to defend it. The player has to dodge the enemy planes guarding the fort, the fort's missiles, the AAA around the fort, and the fort's laser itself... it gets pretty hectic as you can see in the screen below.

It's pretty cool, and hopefully will be fun for other people to fight, but I can't seem to get the beam the fort shoots to look awesome enough. I've been messing with the beam for a while now and I can't seem to find a good look for it.

Well, I'm going to go back to work for a while, let us know what you think of the Fortress!!

Don't forget to let us know what you think about the game, so we can fix the problems before it's too late!!

Your pixel art is freaking sweet. So what do to about the beam? Try a multi tone fading beam, where the inner beam is white, then go to something like dark red that fades to light red. Really hot energy is white, right? Also, the beam must be red. Think death star. Or, something like:

Thanks for the kind words!

I made the beam sort of how you suggested Visage, although the red is more pink than I would like:

And don't be alarmed NickGeorgia, they had help from Russia (they did a lot of work on anti-satellite lasers during the Cold War).
