I heart the new style

Dear Admins,

Please don't give into the haters. This new scheme is much more professional and trendy than it used to be.

Dark and bland color schemes are not professional looking, and they are not attractive. By increasing the visual standard of this website you have also increased its appearance to those that visit here, and its position among the game development community.

Dark color schemes do not reflect the majority of the games produced by the community on this site. Granted there are games that are made by community members here that enjoyed the dark color scheme to reflect the dull and muted colors of their game. Well those games generally don't seem to be gaining much interest anyway (case in point a recent popular commercial release which has made very little proft).

Game design isn't just about game programming. Just because the color scheme of the website doesn't match the lighting scheme of the parents' basements that some community members reside in, that doesn't mean its inherintly bad. We all know programmers are often lulled into a comfort zone and are generally unwilling to accept change. Some times they just need to be shaken up.

So yes, I approve of the new layout.

P.S. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Sounds like your talking directly about EDI's game?

Interesting considering many of the professional games and extremely successful games of the current world are made in a dark environment.

Lets take a look shall we? Half Life, Splinter Cell, Doom, Resident Evil, System Shock, Silent Hill, Swat 4, just to name a few, all of which have a dark feel. Not to mention I belive most games are based on the concept of good verses evil which reiterates what I just said.

While your comments were justified, I have no idea why it sounded like you directly pointed to EDI, considering that EDI is not the only person to say that they did not like the "bright" feel of the layout.

In all honesty, you should do research before you turn tides directly onto somebody about the "dark" set games. (Refer to the prior post). Just to add my fav titles to the list. black and White 2, Fable 2, Quake 4, and a lot more.

Dark schemes are attractive and can be VERY professional. I direct your attention to Research:> www.gamespot.com

Take a look at www.2advanced.com

Seems that you don't quite have your facts straight. I would do some research here too before you point fingers.

Just, quit. lol. I know quite a few people whom are living very comfortable being well lit nerds.

... Are you serious? "unwilling to accept change". In this industry, it is NOTHING but change. Personal opinions do not reflect a hatred against change. Some things are well warrented a definite change, while others just need some well defined explanation -- expecially when it just comes out of nowhere for no apparent reason.

---

My stance on the site. I'm acceptable with the change(I still have 6+ months left on my membership), however, I have no idea why in the world it did change. What I do not like is the idea that the website basically maintained its last templete, except with a white background (more-so grey now). I'm fairly new to the community and the design, functionality and community is what brought me in as a paying customer to support it.

Anyways, Thats my two cents

Most everyone here has made valid remarks, and I respect what you are saying but I disagree with it whole heartedly.

Maybe throwing EDI under the bus was a little extreme. While I didn't like your game, you did put a lot of effort into it and actually completed a massive project which definitely worthy of praise.

I am arguing that most people on this site create games that are geared toward the casual gamer, because as indie developers that IS our market. Of course there are many games here which target a different demographic such Morning's Wrath and Gang War.

But the fact of the matter is this: If you look at the GDNet showcase and the 4e4 entries, the vast majority of those submissions are casual, lighthearted, or simple games. All of these benefit from the new color scheme which reflects their content. Sure dark can be professional, but what was here wasn't. You also have the option to link your blogs to the public from the www2 site, so if it fits your studio's website better, why not just do that?

I am not talking about games from professional studios here, nor am I talking about websites that have NOTHING to do with education and game development. I am saying that this new layout better reflects the content of this site than the old one did. The intentions of what I wrote were no doubt obscured by my cynical remarks, but I think you all misunderstood my point.

Now let's all go eat some turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, and give thanks that we have such a great community of talented people here.

You're not allowed to make fun of the games in the showcase, until you have a game in the showcase.

Nevermind, for some reason your "showcase" link wasn't showing up. Anyway you shouldn't knock on the showcase games just because some people don't like the new theme.

WOAH. do you see what this guy did? he called you what you call yourself. amazing. i have to sit down.

[quote]original post by GDKnightLets take a look shall we? Half Life, Splinter Cell, Doom, Resident Evil, System Shock, Silent Hill, Swat 4,..plenty of other hardcore games that all feature dark colors blah blah blah.[/qoute]

and then you have games like The Sims. There is more to gaming than gothic, dark, machismo violence. Besides looking incredibly sloppy this site was stuffing itself in a 1337-only niche just by its color scheme.

the new design is miles more welcoming, and isnt that what this site is about? encouraging game developement? and providing lessons and know-how to aspiring gamedevelopers? last time i checked it was called gamedev.net not omglookatmygameimso1337.net

You're joking right?

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/08/technology/08game.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5088&en=300074177aff8ca3&ex=1281153600&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

believe it or not dark colors have a stigma of being rebelious, against the norm, unwelcoming, and because of interweb geek culture - elitist. (they also have a sprinking of gothic, horror, males-only thrown in there too.) To a professional site this is not the way to go. I will also point out again that on top of this, the old site was incredibly sloppy. Everything is much more organized, professional, and (most importantly..) VISIBLE.

oh please. IT'S JUST F'IN COLORS!! stop trying to play psychoanalists and decipher your inner self through the stupid colorscheme!

Etherstar, you're entitled to your own oppinion. But claiming that I sit in a basement just because I prefer the darker scheme is just not a good way to discuss. Be glad you're too far away for me to push you down a small cliff =P

The site looks way to mainstream now, but that's OK. I just wish the launch was made different. They should've had a backup, a way for members to keep the old color scheme in case they didn't like the new one. Making the transition simpler.

Oh, and please stay away from personal attacks on specific people through a public medium. Complaining to the world in your journal about EDI is an act you really shouldn't repeat. If you have problems with someone, use the PM system.

Cheers
/JP

PS. Don't mess with EDI, he's a nice guy. Unless you like being pushed down cliffs, then it's ok to mess with him =P
