New planet video

Finally, it is done.

I've been missing some time to fix all the issues, but i'd say it's "good enough". You might notice a bit of popping in the textures, that's because recording with fraps decreased the framerate to the 30s, which in return made the texturing process "lag" a bit. When it's running at over 100 fps, popping doesn't appear.

In addition in some view angles, the atmosphere is not correctly blended with the ring (a sort of dark halo appears, which makes the ring look ugly). I tried to not show it, but that's something i'll have to fix in the future.

The video is a bit long ( 4 minutes ) and weights 75 MB. Encoded in Divx4 as usual.

I know its getting a little repetative to *jaw drop* at your latest shots, but i've never had a chance. So here I am, in awe. Incredible work!

every game i have looks boring now, it already did but this is definetly off the scale
and we all know that the planned end result will equal at least ten times this people. the first jaw-dropping experience in-game

alright i don't require you to fix it before your vacation but:
the movie hangs at 3:39, that is when the 2 planets are visible from a distance. divx didn't play it from there, neither did vlc media player. and my windows media player can't even download its own divx plugin.
the part until 3:29 is jaw-dropping (as mentioned in my previous comment).

-i used the second download link *trying the first one now*
maybe that could be the problem

anyway, thumbs up!

READ THIS:

as in my previous post the movie didn't work from 3:29
divx & vlc failed and windows movie player didn't even take the whole thing. i downloaded from the mirror (second link), but we all know it is very unlikely that THAT could've been the problem.

well... it is.
do NOT download from the mirror, instead use the FIRST link.
i just tested it on windows mediaplayer and he takes it. it now even plays beyond the 3:29 barrier.

*rapidshare, we love you (if you can stand it's extremely bad interface, or even find your way through to the download anyway)

Seconded, it might seem repetitious for us to say it over & over. But it really is WOW!!! [wow]

The mirror version worked fine for me. I used the divx player.

That's amazing ysaneya.

Looks absolutely wonderful, Ysaneya. Keep it up. :)

I positively can not wait to read the post-mortem of this beauty.

It does look great, but PLEASE tell me you'll fix the aliasing on the planets and rings. The images look dreadful with it.

Is the water just flat for now? Or is it watery?

And what about terrain for other planets? Is the code that you did for this earth planet reusable so that it can just be dropped into another planet and BOOM have another planet done and ready?

The video is awesome, it's pretty cool what you've managed to accomplish so far. Props to you.

There's no aliasing in the images, they appear aliased because i had to reduce their size to fit the forum, but try to display them as their real size in your browser, and you'll see that they're perfect.

Laz: haven't worked much on the water yet, so it's flat (and with a uniform color). The Earth-like planet code can be reused for other Earth-like planets, but other types of planets need different texturing, textures, and heightmaps (for example, with craters) that i haven't done yet.

my previous posts about the problem with playing the video:
the file probably got corrupted while downloading, (so both mirrors work)

i just watched it 3 times in a row, still it's jaw-dropping.
but i noticed one thing (you probably know already) :
there is no shadow from the big planet on it's rings.
you can see the rings completely while a huge planet is blokking the light for half the rings.
but hey, it's still gorgeous.
i love the powers-of-ten aspect (when zooming out).
i tryed (spelling?) to play the video in reverse (so beatiful zooming in on the planet and discovering all that much detail).
but couldn't get it done with virtualdub and such.... nvm

Yet again, you just redefined terrain rendering.

I always wanted to get back to my terrain engine(s), but I think I might just give up now. I can't match that!

One question though... how fast can the camera ("player"?) move at surface level? it'd be awesome to go blasting around the surface dipping into the valleys and over mountains [grin]

Get the sense of speed right and there's definitely a racing game in there.

I hope you're not serious. [wink]

10 minutes left to go...

I was a little confused by the screenies at first. I thought you were trying to draw a ring around the Earth-like planet. The perspective looked very odd, but makes sense now that I realize it's another planet. The seemingly close proximity of the other planet threw me off.

9 minutes...

[EDIT]
Movie downloaded. Movie Watched. Pants shat.

Only two things I noticed that were off (other than the popping you already mentioned): the dark line around the planet when the two are drawn over eachother and I also noticed that the larger planet from a far away distance did something kinda funky. Other than that, PERFECTION! There's even clouds =D

I KNOW I'm not the only one itching to see a planet to planet venture. ;-)

What can I say... It is absolutely beautiful.
Now if only you can find a way to generate enough characters/missions/etc. to fill this universe...
