Pissed off

So I went to bed about 12.30 last night. Woke up again around 2am (no idea why) having worked out the reason why my program wasn't displaying anything. The engine makes heavy use of render-targets and so on, and it was composing the image fine - just internally such that it never actually rendered it to the screen. The word muppet comes to mind.

Architecturally the lighting models aren't quite sorted yet. So here, in all it's prehistoric glory, is my project running with ambient and z-fill only:

Having gotten the application to do something I quickly realised that I needed some better meshes (preferrably ones with texture coordinates). So I dug into Blender.

I've never hated a piece of software so much in my whole life

I know that 3D modellers are supposed to be complex, and they love cramming in so many buttons there should be a law against it. But I just can't get on with Blender - I was assuming it's because I'm a n00b and not really the artistic type. I've been following any/every tutorial/guide/wikibook I can find online... it's the interface - every single time.

I've realised that it's not the steps, nor features, that I get stuck on - its the fact that each tutorial is telling me to click on things that I can't find.

So, anyway. I'm in a bad mood now. If I can't somehow sort out some models then my project is dead in the water - crap artwork sinks excellent code everytime.

Anyone got any recommendations for (simple) 3D modelling tools that don't require me to sell my soul to own?

Wings 3D is my favorite program for modelling and texturing. It doesn't deal with non-volumetric meshes very well, but for most things its extremely simple and efficient. It also lacks any animation capabilities.

I had to make at least separate 3 attempts at Blender before I finally caught on, so its not unusual that you find it difficult. I still don't remember all the hotkeys, so I keep all the important references bookmarked: Noob to Pro, Blender Wiki, the User Guide, and the Reference Guide. Its actually a versatile piece of software, especially if you can learn how to script for it.

Thanks for the replies!

I haven't heard of Wings 3D - am gonna go give it a try now. Thanks!

I don't need any particularly complex features - box modelling and UV unwrapping is plenty sufficient for me. Even the UV Unwrapping I could possibly live without as I can just the DX uvunwrap tool.

... population 2 [grin]

I think it's all just a conspiracy by the graphics artists of this world. Look how many jobs they have going for them! They're making the software harder so that theres less competition in the workplace [looksaround]

Thats the only other one that was on my list. I'll be giving that a go as well. Thanks!

More on that later.

Milkshape or the one by Fragmosoft are good packages.

Blender is evil as hell.

I really have to find out how to develop using the MDX GUI system.

Don't think I've spotted that. Will add it to my list to check out - thanks!

If it's anything like the Native/C version it's trivial. It's quite easy to hit it's limitations, but for knocking up a reasonably powerful GUI in no time at all it's great [grin]

Other than having to convert the entire DXUT to the multibyte char set, it's easy. Of course if you used Unicode in the first place you won't have this problem. Check out the CustomUI sample in the DXSDK.
