Tomorrow is the update

Ok, so since no big bugs were discovered in the last few days, and the discovered bugs being all fixed, tomorrow we will update the game.
The Windows packages (full game and update) have been prepared and uploaded in advance, and the players were notified to download them so when we update they'll just install them, rather than have everyone crowd the web server and step on eacother's toes, so to say.

Of course, there are two omipresent things in the Universe: The hydrogen and the idiots. For example, some idiots downloaded the update and extracted it in a stand alone directory, and were complaining they can't connect to the server. Well, duh, morons, it's an UPDATE not a full install, and it should be installed where the game is.
Our installer even finds the game directory by itself (assuming you didn't erase the registry entries where the path is stored).
But as Murphy said, once you make a product idiot proof, the nature keeps up by creating a better idiot.

Oh well..
Updating the server is a relatively easy procedure:
1. Send a message to everyone playing that the server will go down for an update in 20 minutes.
2. Get 100 private messages asking you idiotic questions, ranging from what's new to "will we keep our characters?".
While I don't respond to them, it is still annoying.
3. Log out, wait for those 20 minutes to pass, send a final message that the server is going down, shut down the server.
4. Make a backup of all the players and persistent data, just in case something goes wrong.
4.5 Make a copy of the server and it's data.
5. Copy the binaries and config files and all the data from the test server to the main server.
6. Restart the main server.
7. Look on the forums and wonder how so many idiots didn't manage to install the update properly.

Of course, sometimes there are problems, so a few times we had to restore the backups because some bug or another was found.

One last thing, we broke the players online record again, today, having 560 players on + 50 player owned bots.

Regarding my side project, I didn't get the time to work much at it, but I am compensating now.

Do these people pay anything to play your game?

I don't know if it's such a good idea to refer to your playerbase (or even a small percentage of it) as "idiots" in a public forum.

Though I can definitely tell you're tired of working on that game, and ready to focus on your new one. :)

Progressive hatred of your users is the rule rather than the exception, I assure you.

I see no problem with calling people that arn't smart idiots. There are lots of them out there and they need recognition especially when its the programmers that deal with most of the frustrations trying to explain how to do something when its really not that hard to begin with. :) I feel for raduprv and I know many other programmers out there would feel the same.

They don't pay to play the game, it's a free game. Those who pay pay for ingame items and other services.

Anyway, I never said that they are all idiots. Actually, only about 2% of them are idiots, but 2% out of 2K is still a big number, especially when they band together.

I understand the pain working with pvpgn dealing with people saying how do I run a server and we reply with RTFM :) considering there was a whole documentation written up just to install and setup the server configs and not really that complex.

Don't get me wrong there were plenty of smart users but there are those select few that choose to not read IRC topics, use google, or read manuals and for those do read documentation and manuals I applaud and proudly help. Those that don't deserve to get made fun of in my opinion.

Right. Because I just love to perform lots of google searches and study documentation before I can play a video game.

I still stand by my opinion that it's a poor idea to refer to any portion of your userbase as idiots in such a public forum. Nothing good can come of it, and plenty of harm can be done by it.

I never said anything about Playing a game (you should read better) even though you should read a manual before playing a game. How else would you understand the controls and what you are supposed to do during the game?

He was just letting out frustration on his journal, hence what a journal is for. And I doubt the people he would be referring to as idiots would even be reading a journal if they have failed to follow other simple instructions for a game.

Sorry for the confusion.

Tech support isn't fun. Most of the time its people asking for help that can't follow directions because they are too lazy to read or look around for a bit of help. If you actually have done some tech support for any software you will know what I am talking about.

@Jesse: Lol. The update radu is referring to is an installer, with one dynamic option (install directory.) Even this was automatically detected. Forget googling, or even RTFM'ing - they just had to hit 'OK'.

I do not think it is a bad idea to call the idiots idiots.
I don't believe in the political correctness crap.
If they can't follow some simple instructions, they are IDIOTS and they deserve to be called as such.
If they get offended and stop playing, that's great! We don't want to be known for having a community full of idiots. There are other MMOs for that, which I will not name.

BTW, it would be unprofessional if I named names, but just saying that a small part of the user base is composed of idiots is a perfectly normal and innocent statement.
Most of the groups of people do have a small base of utter morons, whether it is an online game, a country, a school, etc.

Fair enough. It's your journal, write whatever you want. But it's not about being politically correct. It's about not biting the hand that feeds you. (Although obviously not in the literal sense, since they're not paying to play.)

crusadingknight: The google/manual bit was about DreamGhost's post. He already addressed that he was talking about server setup, not the gameplay client. (Obviously you should read the manual to setup any sort of complicated server.) I'll admit that I misread that and was wrong.

Fortunately it is not the idiots that pay, and they are flamed by other players as well on our forums when they as a really stupid question.

Which is good, because most of the players in our game are nice, you won't find so many scammers and kids that constantly curse, like they do on Battlenet, for example.

Which is why Pvpgn was created :) so that players of blizzard games could play without all the hassel, and be allowed to admin the system since blizzard did such a horrible job.

will we keep our characters?

Naw, I'm jokin' with ya. Good luck with the update!
