Installed two great pieces of software yesterday:

The GIMP: Finally got this working. Now I have gradients, and er...stuff.

Notepad++: Although not entirely necessary, I figured I should install this anyway. It turns out to be really good for editing my level files, as I can have all my text files open in tabs.

Level 2 is almost done, and today I'm going to create the Boss. If I finish it today, you can expect a demo tomorrow.

Add uniform noise is one of the effects I use most often, it's pretty cool. (Not in your Gimp thing but it probably has such a feature.)
