Might as well post another entry today...

It seems like no-one managed to correctly guess my age. The closest guesses were made by mcguille25 and Laz, so you can both have a picture of a Xbox 360. Since I'm feeling generous, all other competitors can have the consolation prize of a picture of a PS1. I'll leave figuring out my age as an exercise to the reader...

Edit:It seems the server is having problems right now, so until it's fixed you winners can have, um...., a broken link to a picture of an Xbox 360. There's something you don't see on eBay every day!
Edit 2:Ah, it's working again. Your pictures can now be acquired!

The design document is coming along slowly but smoothly. I've got the premise of the background story figured out, and I've penned a preliminary combat interface system. I'm finding there's a lot of stuff I just can't decide on until I can play a prototype though. Should I have magic as a weapon in the game? How deep should the inventory management be? Should I even have an inventory at all? Should the player be all alone, or a member of a loosely controlled team? I don't think I can answer these questions definitively yet, so once I get the skeleton of the design finished I'll move on to the next stage and come back to fill in the details later. The skeleton should be enough for the functional design and for the crucial element of budgeting my time (I'd really like to be able to estimate how long this is all going to take me!).

It looks like I'm on track to finishing the proto-design by the end of the month, but I keep distracting myself with the aethetics. I've ordered from Amazon a bunch of books on castle architecture and a whole swag of books on how to draw. The drawing aspect is starting to bug me, as I still haven't made up my mind as to the best art style for the ideas in my mind. I figure I need more practice, so I'll probably end up doing something crazy, like attempting to write journal articles in graphic novel form. Or possibly illustrating all my forum queries with a badly drawn web comic.

In the meantime, does anyone have any good suggestions for appropriate "mysterious spooky castle" style game music? Unfortunately I left my classical music CD collection in Melbourne, so all I have at the moment is that fan-made stuff from Castlevania 4 and a few other game pieces (such as a MIDI version of the music from Quest for Glory 4).

I don't think i've ever reached a deadline that i've made for myself unless it was a ridiculously small task with a comparable deadline.

I've been wanting to do this, mostly for 3d model "blueprints" rather than concept art. I also could use some lessons on making better model skins. If you encounter any book along the way that really knocked your socks off, let us know. I know I would find this information very helpful.

That would be a little bit of awesome.

What about something closer to the ambient deep tones similar to what you would hear in a horror movie rather than midi-organ-music?

When I'm looking for music inspiration I turn to my collection of Amiga .mod tunes. A good place to start with is http://www.niksula.cs.hut.fi/~tive/ (or Aminet of course), plenty of site links there too.
Some of the tracks from the game 'Superfrog' have a 'haunted' feel to them (superfrog world 4), kind of, but there are plenty of others.

Also, do I get a cool certificate?

Ah well it was good drawing practice anyway & I learnt some stuff too. Got any more lineart to share? I can't draw good characters for toffee

Comiserations / congratchamulations btw, you're a day older than you were yesterday.

Unfortunately, none of the stuff I'm reading would be that much help for model skins; I've already made the decision that the game will be 2D, or possibly 2.5D (using 3D effects for the background or special effects). I'm aiming for a 16-bit era console feel with this game, except in a higher resolution.

As for music, I've considered using proper horror as a base, but it doesn't seem appropriate. The game itself is not going to be scary at all, as it will be drawn in a cartoonish style (partly because I like that look, mostly because that's all I can draw!). Thus I'm finding it difficult to pick the right music style, since I want it to sound slightly "light-hearted 16-bit era RPG" but with a mock horror twist. I guess a mix of Monster Bash and Castlevania would be a good approximation (I've got to hunt down my copy of Monster Bash too; I'm pretty sure that's also in Melbourne).

As for my age, since joint winners mcguille25 guessed 27 and Laz guessed 29, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out [grin].

Thanks, I'll see if I can hunt down some appropriate Amiga pieces. I've never owned an Amiga, so they'll be some good ones I haven't heard yet (same with the Castlevania series, actually. I was pretty late to the console scene).

Oh, and for your colouring efforts, you can have this:

Well done! [grin]

Annoying kid next to me: Sir, sir! He cheated with the shoes!
*slap* shhh!

Check out the Amiga version of Castlevania (& look out for the .mods), I'm pretty sure the series started on a Commodore platform of some sort, might be wrong though.

Sounds like a cool genre mix - made me think of rubber bats on strings bouncing around & monsters missing their cues.. "er, uhmm, booo!" :)
