Lead technical designer for 2D MMO wanted
EDIT: Here's the basic deal. I am looking for a co-designer who is an experienced programmer. In exchange for your ideas going into the game design, you promise to make sure the programming part of the game gets made, including recruiting and managing any staff programmers. In exchange for my ideas going into the game design, I promise that the art, story, and other game content gets made, including recruiting and managing any staff artists and writers. So you can see, this will only work if you are excited and inspired by the type of game described below.
Team name: not yet named
Project name: "Becoming" is one idea, but we won't pick a name until the basic design is decided on.
Brief description: This is not your typical MMORPG. Using 2D anime graphics this interactive story game will focus on breadth rather than length, giving players individually meaningful journeys through the game's branching plot, NPCs to romance, several different endings to aim for, and encouragements to replay the game several times. Gameplay will be combat-optional, meaning players can progress by fighting (in different styles: alone, in a party, against monsters, against other players, arcade, shooting, or tactical) but can also progress equally well by crafting (via playing minigames) or being a merchant. Adventure-style puzzles will also be part of the gameplay. And that's all that I have decided so far - this project is still in the design stage, and I will be happy to incorporate the ideas of a co-designer.
Target aim: Game will be free to play, supported by ads, surveys, cash in-game items, and physical items like t-shirts and keychains.
Compensation: Profits from the game (after server and bandwidth costs) will be split among team members according to amount of time invested.
Technology: This is what I need you for - to decide the technology, and provide licenses for any technology you want to use. You must be familiar with the available technology and able to choose what will work, and if necessary train staff programmers in how to use it.
Talent needed: Must be an experienced programmer. Must be enthusiastic about making the type of game described above. Should have an example game I can play, preferably some sort of realtime 2D game. Should have your own creative game design ideas to combine with mine; I would like to see examples of a game design doc, a script or story if you write, etc, a song if you compose music, etc.
Team structure: Me, and hopefully you. [wink] And further team members will be divided under us, programmers recruited and managed by you, non-programmers recruited and managed by me.
Contacts: Please reply in this thread or PM me
Previous Work by Team: Who am I? I am a game designer/writer/2D artist. I have 6 years of experience doing indie game design, but no playable games due to a lack of a partner who is a motivated and skilled programmer.
My design doc for the single-player combat-optional RPG Xenallure
I'll put a link to my art and stories here because I know someone will ask for it, however while I intend to write most of the script for the game I may not end up doing much/any of the art, so please keep that in mind.
And here's a thought about what the (thin female version of the) game's avatar's might look like, (warning female nudity) but again, if I don't end up doing the art this will be irrelevant.
Feedback:
ENCOURAGING ONLY (Please do not criticize the basic type of game, or me personally. However suggestions for the setting of the game, technology which might be used to implement the game, or how to go about finding a skilled and loyal technical designer are welcome. [smile] )

Thanks for the good word. [smile]
To anyone interested in this project and wanting to discuss it in realtime, I will be logged in to AIM and MSN most of the day today, so please PM me your AIM or MSN name so we can chat. [smile] My AIM name is sunandshadow1, sorry but I can't publicly post my MSN name because it's also my email address.

Heh, I doubt I would be terribly interested, but may I ask you what language you plan on having this written in?
All languages/engines/dev kits/libraries/etc. will be up to the lead technical designer. But it will have to be something that can do what I want to do:
- realtime arcade-style combat in one minigame
- a square-tile-based isometric farming sim in another minigame
- character avatars which are custom sprites automatically created by flattening several transparent layers of clothing onto a character base
- a messageboard/PM system
- adventure-game style puzzles
- etc.
So presumably we will want a database to store all the players' data especially the game's market, and since the game will be ad-supported making it browser-based with the realtime minigames in flash would be one possibility... well, since the most programming I would be doing would be a little scripting, I really don't care what the game is made with as long as it works.

My partner says "do the magic" when referring to programming.
Any interest, contact me at spikesofchrist@gmail.com

It wouldn't necessarily have to be browser-based, that's just the most obvious option. The alternative would be to have a client which could display advertising the same way a web browser could.
*eyes your email address* I don't usually work with christians, because since I am an atheist, a writer of erotica, and pro gay rights, christians usually aren't best pleased with my stories. For example Becoming would permit marriage between 2 avatars of the same gender and sexual roleplay would be permitted in age-verified areas. but if you'd be cool with all that let me know and we can have an IM session to discuss details.
