Clarification on scripts please.

I have heard a lot of talk about scripts and script engines, but I have never seen an actual definition of what they were. Can anyone please post a link to an article or give a short definition of what they are and how they are useful? I tried several search engines, but none of the articles gave much info. Thanks a lot.

You could look at the SCUMM engine it''s the Script Coding Utility for Maniac Mansion, a very old but great game. SCUMM is behind many of the games by Lucas Arts.
