Index buffers and sprite maps

If I build 4 quads and want to have texture coordinates {0,0,spritesize,spritesize} for the 1:st quad and {spritesize, 0,spritesize,spritesize} for the 2:nd quad how can I accomplice this with a vertex buffer with only 9 vertices and a index buffer with 24 indices? Vertex 0 and 1 for example (look at picture) share the same texture coordinates! Is it possible to have a index buffer with unique points but also have control over the texture coordinates and have the possiblity to pick sertain "areas" from a texture and map it to sertain vertices? v7 . v8 . v9 . . v4 . v5 . v6 . . v0 . v1 . v3 Thanks, Borion Breck.
