I wrote a tetris clone with it a few months ago. Its super easy to use. It does have some 3d functions I didn''t explore, I couldn''t tell if allegro uses DX/opengl or some kinda hokey software/dos renderer. I highly recommend allegro for newbies.

Sure, I have installed allegro myself (not yet used it), it surely real good, but it is for DOS! As most people know; DOS is quite outdated theese days, so try directX instead. Nowadays with dx8.1 and openGL is gameprogramming no match, even newbies (like myself) wont have problems with theese.
