Can I store indices on the card?

We can assure vertices get stored on the video card through wglAllocateMemory and friends. Is there a way to store the primitive indices array (index buffer in DX speak) on the card as well, or are we stuck sending all the indices through system memory to the card via DrawElements? What about storing the indices in the memory you get from wglAllocateMemory and then passing that pointer as the parameter in DrawElements? Would the array be pulled up to system mem off the card by OpenGL when we pass it? Thanks.
