Quake 3 Models and Ligthing

hi, does anybody know how to do lighting on a 3d-animated character such as quake 3 models? i want to know how it works to understand it, don´t want to use some precalculated data from Q3 models. how is this done? lightmapping would be too slow to update in real time for so many polygons... so i think it is a cheat? thanks Gammastrahler
