the only way you learn anything is to write it 100% yourself. Also, that way, your in complete control of the code, and WILL know exactly why bugs occur when they do.
There are some situations where you should use downloaded code though, in my current project, the only code i didn''t write from scratch is the .dds DXTC texture decompressor. which obviously isn''t something I could have written myself (but I did rewrite a good chunk of it to suit my needs). Otherwise it''s all mine.

I personally absolutly hate people who blatantly rip code and shove it into a project. I cringe when I see meta balls/fractals/knots in demos, code, or whatnot. All they show is that the person responcible knew how to copy and past and hit F5.

sorry if I sound negative, but thats my view.

I''m not completely against it. I think being able to use others code can be very beneficial.
Instead of forcing you to completely think it all up yourself, you have something you can take apart and dissect. I don''t have my own .3ds loader admittedly, I''m not good enough to make that (yet). But I''m sure as I progress I''ll write my own.

What I am against is passing things off as your own, which is illegal, immoral, and just plain low.

well. yes. thats a good example. a Loader, but not a renderer, for example.

it''s a very good learning experience to rewrite any code you do download.
