Screen Resolution

I''ve been working on a 2d animated game for awhile now and I''ve noticed that even at 640 by 480 resolution, the sprites seem to move pretty slow, or the game gets slowed down. I always figured that people just set the screen size to something like 320x240 or something to make the amount of work even smaller... How do you do that? I''ve also noticed that sometimes games can use 1028x786 resolution and the game runs smoothly despite all of the work... Why is it that my small sprites can slow down my computer but a large full screen app running at 1028x786 doesn''t....

Are you creating your own blitter and looks something like this:

//psuedo-code
for h=1 to bitmap.height
for w=1 to bitmap.width
if (bitmap[h][w] is not transparent)
surface.setpixel(x+w,y+h,bitmap[h][w]);
