I''m reading a book that gives an example of a constant as: const constType CONSTNAME value; So I try using it like this; const string HELLO "Hello!"; And it gives me an error message: error C2143: syntax error : missing '';'' before ''string'' What am I doing wrong?

Also, remember to:

#include <string>

// and

use std::string;
// or

use namespace std;
// or declare the constant as

const std::string hello = "Hello";

If you don''t understand what the std thing is, read about namespaces in your book.
