concern when using D3DFVF_XYZRHW

Why is is that when I''m using the D3DFVF_XYZRHW flag for my vertex format and I set my z-value to 1.0f for all of the vertices in my vertex buffer the object doesn''t appear. (Any value below 1.0f and the object does appear.) I was under the assumption that 1.0f was the furtherest depth still visible. Has anyone else encounter this problem or possibly have an explanation for it? Thanx.
