D3D8 antialias

When I do full_scene antialiasing it slows down everything horribly. I cant seem to get any difference if I set the render state for MULTISAMPLEANTIALIAS or EDGEANTIALIAS to true or false...? things only change when I set the multisample type in the d3ddevice parameters. Im pretty much following the sdk docs. Whats the deal with this stuff...It works but is extremely slow. Any help would be nice.
