Some questions

Hello guys, i''m trying to learn per-pixe lighting and then i''ll give a try in bump mapping, well, got some questions for you if you can help me. 1º How register combiners interact with the scene ? 2º What the hell are vertex programs ? Do i need them for per-pixel lighting ? 3º I''ve read a tutorial that used register combiners to calculate the light attenuation and it also used 2 textures(kinda light map or something), one 2D(xy) and the other 1D(z). Do i need those textures to achieve per-pixel lighting ? Well, that''s all for now. Thanks a lot. Bye
