Newbie Blending Question

ok.... I thought I understood the basic concept of blending, but well Is it possible to blend rgba-textured (modulated-lighted)ploygons together, though they are drawn from near to far????? I intended to implement a smoke generator in my engine. and because of drawing about 50 textured quads in my procedure, I didn''t actually want to sort them from far to near (relative to the viewer not to mention..) So right now I end up with polygons that take a look around the sides of the nearer ones (I think everyone has seen THAT phenomenom) really looks great;-) So, pleaaaaseeeee!!!! I hope somebody''s out there, who tells me that I don''t have to sort my polygons from far to near (lazy as I am I would rather not do that)
