Layered Sprites

Hi, I''m writing a fantasy game and I want to have 2-D isometric (rendered 3d) sprites with multiple weapon choices. i.e. a warrior with a spear, or a sword, or an axe. Should I re-render the entire animation with a new object/weapon or is it worth it to use layers to add a weapon sprite to the base charector sprite in the correct postion. If so does anyone know any good references for this? It seams tedious when animating attack motions, but it would be great to be able to show lots of different combinations. Thanks
