Tiles... r they really useful?

Well, a few 512x512 bmps will obviously consume a lot more RAM than tiles, apart from that there isn''t much difference performance-wise. From the administrative point of view it''s of course something totally different. Doing collision detection and such is far easier (and, in consequence, probably quicker, so it sort of is a performance issue) when you have a mathematically easily represetable form of data - tiles are so common because they are easy to use, to program, to get your head around, and of course, to debug.
This is of course just off the top of my head, there surely are other issues.
