3ds Max --How to get the Models in an engine
Ok. I am working on a 3d Isometric engine, but have not the slightest clue how I would get a 3ds Render in the engine...
Any thoughts?
I suggest you use Maya''s .obj files to start with. Its an easy to understand fileformat and when you got the hang of them it will be easier for you to use other formats.
www.wotsit.org got specifications on both formats. Thats a good start :D.

Look on Google for ''lib3ds''. It''s a library to read in a .3ds file, and comes with a sample program for displaying it using OpenGL.
Ok don''t laugh, but I have the engine done in Visual Basic with DirectX 8.0....Did not feel like learning c++.....
Is there a tool for Vb?

I''ve tried a ton of LIBs to load all sorts of 3D formats and the easy one I found one the one I wrote myself. Just do what I did, use MaxScript to write an export script to export your own file setup. Look in the help file for Vertex Selections and Face functions and use the FileIO functions to create your own model format. Then just load that using your own code in your engine. I got a working exporter and loader written in an hour. It is a very simply file, but simple is sometimes the best.
Thanks for your help! I actually dont have a copy of 3ds Max, my artists have that. I guess that I will have to load a copy of it.
Thanks
Keith
