OpenGL Bones and OpenGL

hi all i''m programming my game using OpenGL, and i''m getting to character animation now. I use 3D Studio Max to create the models, but what i want to know is how bones work, and how can i use them in my openGL game for animation. i would really apreciate any references and/or tutorials on how to do that. thanx in advance
