Multi coloured blotches

I''ve done a simple create for a d3d full screen window, with a black background (nothing else), one strange thing though there seems to be a radom pattern of multi coloured flickering blotches, what could be the symptom of this?? I tried taking a screenshot but the screenshot seems to only capture the black background.

It could just be garbage in video memory which isn''t cleared out because you haven''t written any polygons to the screen yet. Does it go away when you add a BeginScene/EndScene and importantly a Clear() ?

Ah ha, I figured it out, when I was clearing the back buffer I was also clearing the Z buffer, except I neither have the Z buffer enabled nor do I need it either (2d game).
