Heightmap generation

Do you guys know of a really good algorithm for creating 8bit grayscale heightmaps of varying sizes? Or is there a tool that does this already? At the moment I am having to create the maps in PSP7, which for 32x32x8 isn''t a problem but 1024x1024 or higher is going to be.

I think you''re talking about a Perlin Noise algorithm or Mid-point Displacement algorithms.

Try a search for these (here at GD too)


Also, a good generator of these images is Terragen (its free!)
