Did a programmer at id have to type that up? Is there a pattern and WTF does it do? I smell fear.

I would guess it is either a lookup table or some hard coded easter egg. BTW, it was most likely generated by a small program and then copy+pasted in, that way you avoid wasting time generating it every time the program starts.

It''s a table of precomputed normals used for the character models. Each vertex structure in the model points to one of these by use of an index offset value. It helps by being able to store a byte (I believe a byte) per normal instead of three floats.

That''s complex stuff. I think this stuff is more complex than rocket science I''ve ever seen. I wish I could just put my head to a book and absorb the knowledge.

IMHO, you''re not going to learn anything by looking at that Quake code.

The style is, well, crap. And there are too many optimizations and
hacks all over the place, so I doubt anyone beginning programming can
follow it and know what''s going on.

Get yourself some well-structured, documented code and start
with that.
