setting my ships D3DXMATRIX

Can someone please show me how to do this I am going crazy and my ship is doing some crazy stuff. What I need to know is how to take my ship’s local matrix lets call it (D3DXMATRIX m_mLocal) and then be able to rotate and pitch the ship. See the problem is that for some reason I keep having the problem of the ship rotating right and then not pitching right or vie versa. For example say you are looking at the back of the ship. Then if you pitch or roll it the ship looks fine. But if you roll it and then pitch it the pitch is still up and down and the ship is on its side and I don’t want that. So does someone have an example on how they would set the local matrix for their ship? And could you please show me in code. Thanks a million
