There is a fair amount of research in this area and a couple of products, but the products are expensive and really work best with coarser geometry. Something like an action figure requires a decent amount of detail and for that you''d be better off with products/techniques that explicitly have a range finding capability. The problem is that they are also very expensive.

Roland makes a scanner that can scan 3D features. It''s somewhat affordable (well, more affordable than other solutions anyway... ~$1000), but it''s dirt slow and fairly limited. The upside is that the resolution can be very high.
