OpenGL Game Programming source woes
Recently I picked up the book and started delving into the code used in chapters 20 and 21 and have run into a small issue. Opening up the workspace in Visual C++ and compiling and executing the code from within the IDE i get an unhandled exception error in nvopengl.dll. Running the newly compiled exe outside of the IDE presents no problems nor does the original. Also I''ve noticed that after running the program from within the IDE there is alot of Access Violations in the debug window. (This doesnt always happen).
Has anyone else run into these issues? I''ve searched the forums a bit and haven''t seen any other reports so it could very well be an issue with my system. I''m still in the process of setting up another PC to test this out on in hopes that it runs fine and indicates the issue is with my development PC.
Here''s my current setup:
Windows 98 (original edition, no service packs)
Intel Pentium 4 2Ghz
Visiontek Geforce4 Ti-4600 (current driver is ver. 28.32)
ASUS P4B266 motherboard
Sound Blaster Live!
Netgear Network Card
DirectX ver. 8.1
I''ve even tried removing the GF2 putting in a GF2 and have tried 3 different versions of drivers. Next on my list is to do a format of the HD and reinstall the OS/drivers/VC++.
Any help/insight is greatly appreciated!

I have had access violations, but that's all other than a couple of bugs in the code (the mouse clean-up code is wonky). A seach on Google Groups seems to indicate that memory is being addressed wrongly, but I couldn't get to the root of the problem and haven't worried too much about it since the code always runs okay.

Well if there is indeed problems with the code, I''d like figure out whats wrong and fix it. I''ve been ripping stuff out of the base code (orgo, sod, and rocket classes to start with) to whittle down the problem area but so far the issue is still there. It''s going to take some more investigation.
I''d like to move forward with the code and start building a game engine around it, but unless the foundation is rock solid, theres little point. If you happen to run across any fixes for the problems (that is, if its not my system thats the problem), please post them here and likewise I''ll do the same.

Interestingly, the guy who wrote 3DPool (available in the GD Showcase) used the Simpengine from the book and doesn''t get the access violations. I''m giving him my source code to compile and run in debug mode. If he gets the errors, it''s something in the code; if he doesn''t, it has something to do with the PC setup. I''ll let you know what happens.

Well, he didn''t get any errors at all, so I reckon it must be something to do with the setup of the PCs.

Yeah, I''m pretty sure its gotta be something with my PC. I''m still doing some testing. I did a full format of the system, reinstalled the OS/hardware drivers and the issue is still there.
Thanks for looking into it. What OS did your friend try this on btw?

He''s running Windows XP; I''m running Win 98. I''m going to try updating my video driver in the morning.
