i''m having trouble creating realistic looking textures for my low polygon models. is there any tutorial/book out there which covers techniques for creating photo-realistic textures in photoshop? or is photoshop not a good tool for this? any advice would be greatly appreciated. >>plectrum

What program are you creating your models in? IIRC, there was this wonderful plugin for 3dsmax which would export a color-coded image to be skinned, that you could then draw over.

Don''t listen to me. I''ve had too much coffee.
i''m modeling with trueSpace5, but i have 3dsmax..
but the problem i have is that i can''t find tutorials/books on painting realistic textures with photoshop, i have no trouble unwraping the model.

not an easy subject to get much info on... best resources ive found are photoshop communities themselves. (eg. www.deviantart.com)

but there is this book, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735709181/ref=pd_sim_books_1/103-5743461-8553451
the reviews seem very promising... im hoping to get it myself soon!

Check out "3D Game Art - F/X and Design"
auth. Luke Ahearn, publ. by Coriolis. ISBN# 1-58880-100-4
It has some great tutorials and comes with a texture library and
open-source game engines Genesis3D and Reality Factory,
so you can import/test your 3dsMax models in a real-time environ.

tip: use a digital camera

and photoshop will do nicely (sometimes you can get better effects with painter, but it´s more a question of preference - the crappy painter interface is usually not worth the trouble).
Maybe you can use some of the tuts from:

http://www.planetquake.com/skindom/features/flesh/index.shtm
http://www.studio-erebus.com/studio/tutorials.html

Then try a combination with the painting stuff from the tuts and real picture (camera).
