camera transformation

I am making a simple engine ,it just renders wireframe objects. i cant get the camera working , i read some tutorials ,they seem to do the camera transformation by using vector which point at the direction the camera is looking ,anyway my question is can u do it with simple rotations ,ie rotate the world around u . if (x,y,z) is the point and (cx,cy,cz) the camera position then rotate the point (x-cx,y-cy,z-cz) around the y axis for looking left and right. it seems to work fine but when i move forward it gets screwed. is it possible to do it with simple rotations if then how do u move forward ,left ,right etc. if u have any ideas plz reply.thanks
