Non complying object in max...

I have created an arm with 3 bones and used the skin modifier and set up the envelopes...I have a stick that the hand is supposed to hold, but when I go to move the arm the stick stays still and the hand carries on as if it weren''t supposed to hold anything...I''m not a newbie or anything, I understand it has to be joined, but I''ve tried attaching it (it changed the color of the stick, and deforms it when I move the arm), linking (acts as if nothing has happened...stick stays still), and grouping (same effect as linking)...the arm is fully boned and set up, it''s just that the object it''s supposed to hold isn''t following no matter what I do...any help would be much appreciated...
