file packages/zip archives?

i want to store all the game files in packages, to reduce the number of files. i don''t care about encryption, but compression would be nice, but by no means necessary. i am going to make an editor that can browse textures and meshes, and you can place the meshes in the bsp and textures on the surfaces. i want to be able to import textures and meshes into packages in the editor, and save the packages. of course, i can forgo a lot of that if i need to, but it would be nice to have. can ziplib do this? or i read in another thread something about putting files in dlls, but that doesnt have compression (i''m guessing)

zlib does compression \ decompression. You have to interpret the zip file yourself. However, there is plent of source linked of zlib''s site that has small basic zip file readers etc. Writing zips should be trivial as well.
