Give me the low-down on BSP

I can test for occlusion between any two convex polygons perfectly, but want to take it to the next level, a full bsp. I don''t know what nodes and leaves are. I understand brush geometry pretty well, and did my occluder just by finding the edges of the occluding object and forming a series of planes originating at the camera and projecting out around the edges of the occluding object. If all an object''s vertices lie behind every one of these planes, obviously it is occluded. I want to do this right. Give me the good stuff. If you can, explain in terms of brush geometry!
