how does floppy disk formatting work?

what is actually going on there. i mean if i stick in a mac floppy disk, and my pc formats it to work for pcs, what is going on? not that ir eally want to, but would programming something like this be hard? what would it involve? im just curious :D

Fmifs.dll is only available on Windows NT (and 2k/XP), and the DLL appears to be undocumented by MS. Search around on Google; I remember another article that was a lot longer on how to use the DLL.

I have no idea how to format floppy disks on other platforms.
