Only thing I can think of is a memory conflict of some sort (one storage writing or initializing into another).

But from what he showed, I can''t point that out.

I don''t know anything about D3D at all, but here''s a random guess:

Does vid_d3dInfo have a static member whose constructor may interfere with the device context gubbins?
