Does anybody know how to retreive the current color depth from Windows? Id like to run my game in whatever color depth that windows is currently in, but I dont know how to figure out what color depth the desktop is. I tried creating an HDC from my main window, calling GetPixelFormat with it, but that just returned zero.

I have no idea but a quick search came up with:

int GetDeviceCaps(
HDC hdc, // handle to the device context
int nIndex // index of capability to query

It might help, if hdc is 0 it should query the screen.
