What's your language preference?
Im a newbie to C++ and really want to learn how to program massive multiplayer games. (example: Runescape).
Ive programmed in VB since i was 7 yrs old (im 17 now). Everything from VB 1.0 in DOS to Visual Studio''s VB 6.0 Prof. Edition.
What Im wondering is: what I should use as a language for multiplayer programming?
I hear VB is no good for that kind of stuff except for the simplicity of coding with Winsock and basic p2p connections.
C++ seems to be the way to go, or perhaps I should look into that new C# language? I don''t know! So please tell me what you would recommend for mutliplayer modern-game programming for massive multiplayer RPGS and the like.
Email me at MatchNL@angelfire.com or something so I have a direction to go for programming. I need to start learning how to do this stuff, so please help me in any way possible!
i your are a C++ newbie, try Java... it''s the best programming langage for network... and it''s easier to learn... but it depends exactly of the game you want to make... can you give more details ?
Well he did say runescape. So I looked up runescape.com I found a MMORPG at http://www.runescape.com/ but I don''t know if that''s what he''s talking about. THere is a free version if you want to try it out.

In 13 year I know good basic (for Yamaha, Comdore, Z-Spectrum), fortran and assembler for 8080 and Z80 (later i know good for 8086)
After when I writed own paint in basic, I have filling as i was f##ked (sorry), after that i start study pascal and C. But programing in C more pleasure when pascal. When I fill free use pointers, assebler code, system calls (interrupts, hardware) I think when I know all about computer, I wrote some viruses, resident programs, hack IMP PC LAN (newtork) it was time of my euphoria. But It was on DOS and not 386.
In 16-17 year I have access for Unix (HP-UX) after 3 mounth used, i know whan i know nothing about IT, and continue developing in C. (C++ in 93-94 years not be popular, and i don''t know anything about object-oriented programing). I read intresting thing about Prolog and Lisp, my mind turn over after 3 mounth of used Lisp and can''t build good program in C about 6 mounth (but i Lisp i wrote AI for play preferanc (card game)
In 19 start programing on PC (return on PC, but Windows), GUI and start use Object Windows (OWL), it''s my first introducing in C++. In 20 when released OWL2 I must totaly rewrite my old programs and when I started use DataBases. So ... After what my ideology OOP changed again, after what programing only End-Used Library. All project diveded several libraris.
It''s my small history when I become profesional developer.
Now I''m 26.
Sorry for my poor English.
If you whant realy know good OOP, use Java. It "turn your mind" in OOP (if you''ve not used OOP before).

Thankx for the input...
Ya Runescape.com is the site for the rpg i was talking about. Something along those lines would be enough to suit my needs.
Java sounds like the way to go, yet it seems like more of a pain to compile it. Since i already have Visual Studio prof ed 6.0 with C++ on it... why not just learn the hard stuff first and let Java kind of ''fall into place''?
For Chman_a11w, The game Ive been designing in databases so far is basically a Runescape style remix of Xenogears and well... my own design actually.
Perhaps a futuristic bad-gfx 3d rpg is good for me now. My ultimate goal is to create a world exactly like the real world and have it be a massive multiplayer game where you simply live another life. That''s basically what every programmer''s dream is to do, create another world so you can do things that you wouldnt dare do in real life

I highly recommen C/C++. C++ is currently the most dynamic, most extensible programming language. C++ inherits both low-level (C) and high-level (OOP) paradigms.
Most, if not all, popular game developer use C/C++.
