Testing player hardware

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a way to test the player''s video card to make sure it supports all the features the game needs, features such as alpha-blending? I want to implement something like this into my game so it will alert the player if their video card won''t show the game properly. Maybe not even allowing them to enter, what do you think about that idea? -- Ivyn --

All games do this to some extent. For directX you need to check the D3DCAPS8 structure (for dx8 at least). There''s lots of info in the SDK documentation about this.

Hi!

I remember that there is a database with the device caps of different video cards anywhere in the www.

Does anybody know the link to this database ?

Thanks

the idea is one u must have in ur game (unless you want ur game to crash when somethng that is supposed to happen cant because of hardware restrictions)

Cold_Steel is correct. check the D3DCAPS8 structure. everything that is supported by directX can be checked if it is supported on the users machine. and its very simple to use. there is a little tutorial on this kinda stuff here
