Texturing a map

We are doing an RTS game, and we have 3d map with billboarded characters. I am now trying ot apply "rings" indicating size and direction of these units. These rings are to be placed on the ground, and thus follow the ground and not floating in the eare if the ground is not flat. What is the best way to solve this problem. Utopico
