glGetDoublev (GL_*_MATRIX, ****); errors and placement

i''m using gluUnProject to use mouse coords and i understanc all the concepts to do it like the rays and whatnot...but my call to gluUnProject keeps returing GL_FALSE and after a bit of examining i found that my matrices i''m getting (via glGetDoublev) are all zero matrices...where should i place them to get correct values? i''ve never had this problem when doing frustum culling...so this is very confusing...thanks -cody
